More than 700 million people or about 11% of the world’s population go to bed hungry every night! Do you think about them and the economic, political and social consequences of their hunger? Fortunately, not everyone ignores this immense challenge of our world, with cross-cutting impacts across sectors and economies, worldwide. On the 21st of July 2025, our CEO had the privilege of having a very engaging and cheerful conversation with two gentlemen who don’t — Dr Stefan Schmitz, Executive Director of the Crop Trust, and Dr Conrad Rein, Secretary of the Global Flagship Initiative for Food Security. Dr Schmitz, although on leave, sought and received permission from his lovely family, just to speak with me! Thank you VERY much! The gentlemen affirmed their commitment to tackling global hunger with zeal and turning the Flagship into a practical reality, an Initiative of the Arab-Gulf Fund (AGFUND), Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Crop Trust, Saudi Fund for Development, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and OPEC Fund. We creatively explored ways of doing so. As a member of the Flagship, our CEO was encouraged by their understanding of the problems and keenness to make sure that the initiative does not become just another talkshop! Among the practical projects discussed is the idea of creating impactful model farms which would visualize the positive consequences of the Flagship Initiative for lives, livelihoods and economies at the community, national and international levels, starting in Africa. The two gentlemen, working with the founders of the Initiative, such as Dr Sidi Tah, outgoing President of BADEA and President-elect of the African Development Bank (AfDB), and our Co-founder Nasser Alkahtani, Executive Director of AGFUND, have already drawn attention to the Flagship at the highest levels of national governments, UN system, African Union, Civil Society organizations, corporations, etc., although the Initiative was launched only in December last year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
